4 Steps to move past the fear of Public Speaking

The dreaded public speech

Speaking in front of an audience seems to be a scary endeavor for so many people. Maybe you’re one of those people. And really I’m not sure that there is anyone who doesn’t feel some kind of nervousness before they give a speech or give a presentation in front of a group of people. And I asked myself why?

The truth behind the fear

I know there are many reasons, but the first thought that came to my mind is that people fear being vulnerable in front of group of people. This fear of vulnerability can appear as a long list of What ifs – What if I say something wrong. What if I can’t remember my speech. What if they make fun of me. What if I……..endless ifs.
The good news, in my opinion, is that when someone comes to the realization that vulnerability is what they fear, now they can being to work on a plan to move past it. Here are a few steps that I think can help you do just that.

 4 Steps to move past the fear of Public Speaking

  1. Realize that everyone has the same fear, but you’re a step above because you’re slapping fear in the face and doing it anyways.
  2. Remind yourself that it probably won’t ever be as bad as you think.
  3. Practicing to the point of reflex-like-memorization can relieve a lot of the stress and anxiety.
  4. Keep the end result in mind:
    • Passing the class
    • Getting the job
    • Helping someone else with your message

I’ve been speaking in front of groups of different sizes for over a decade now and have used these steps. The good news is they have helped me get over my anxiousness long enough to get through it. The bad news is, even to this day there are many times I still get nervous. But even though the nervousness is sometimes still there the more I do it the easier it gets to put these steps into practice. Go for it! Follow these steps and don’t let the fear of speaking in public speaking hold you back.
