How Hollywood Got What God Wants All Wrong

At least a couple of movies come to mind, where someone is trying to please God or obey Him.

The movies make the interaction between God and the person to be very cold and impersonal.

It’s almost like God doesn’t talk to them unless He wants them to do something for Him.

The character impersonates someone who is beat down by guilt.

Guilt that comes from an unloving God’s high expectations.

So they begrudgingly obey the command which is normally something that seems unfair to everyone including those watching.

What does god want?

How Hollywood Got What God Wants All Wrong

Does he want your obedience? Does he want somebody who can. dot the “I’s” and cross the “T’s”tease religiously speaking? Is God just up in heaven constantly working on a to-do list for Christians?
I believe the answer is yes and no.
God doesn’t just want your obedience. Because if God wanted just obedience than Jesus would’ve loved the Pharisees. The Pharisees were the best in their day at obeying the rules. But instead, Jesus would say do not be like the Pharisees.

Matthew 23:27 gives us an account of a very harsh remark that Jesus makes at the religious leaders, Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.”

If it was just obedience that He wanted than Jesus didn’t need to come and die. He would’ve just left things the way they were. The religious élite were doing a really good job with superficial obedience.
So just obedience is not what God wants.
Even though Hollywood portrays what God wants this way, God wants more than just obedience.

 God is building a family

Ephesians 1:5 “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”
God is bringing a people to himself because He is bringing together a family.
This is why Jesus tells us in Matthew 22:37 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
It’s more than just obedience because that is not how a family works. A family can only function in a healthy way when it does what it does out of love.

God is building a home

Revelation 21:1 “Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away…”

God is bringing a people to himself because He is preparing a new home for His family.

Don’t settle for Hollywood’s description of what God wants. It is so far from the truth. God is a good heavenly father that loves you and is preparing you for something greater than you could ever imagine.
