I Hate Religion

I hate Religion

I guess I need to clarify what I mean by religion.

I hate religion that is used as a platform to make some seem more important than others. I hate religion that works hard at looking the part but never being more than a better talking and better dressing version of the same person you’ve always been. I hate religion based on a checklist to measure your spirituality against everyone else’s. I hate religion that is more of a ticket into a spiritual social club.

I hate this kind of religion because it keeps people from seeing what real religion is.

It keeps us from seeing the beauty of TRUE religion.

I LOVE religion

I love true religion.  James the half-brother of Jesus Christ describes to us what true religion looks like in James 1:26-27.

Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and
their religion is worthless.
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:
to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

I love true religion because it seeks to build others up instead of tearing them down with words in order to make yourself look more spiritual. I love true religion because it seeks to rebuild what a sin-wrecked world has destroyed -like marriages, death, and pure hearts. I love true religion because it makes us look inward at our faults as we seek God for restoration. Rather the pointing at everyone’s else’s faults while standing on a stool of false spiritual superiority. I love true religion because it shows God love for his people and his hate towards sin.

Jesus takes true religion seriously

Jesus takes religion personal. Look at his statement in Matthew 25:35-40

For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink?  Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’  “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’

When we live out true religion it’s as if we live out for him. When we reject people, we reject Jesus. When we feed people we feed Jesus. When we ignore the poor, we ignore Jesus. When we care for the orphans and widows, we care for Jesus.

So, let me rephrase. I love Jesus’ version of religion, not ours. I love true religion.

What about you has this been the case in your life?

Have you been hurt by religion that is not as Jesus meant it to be?

Would you reconsider religion…true religion?
