You Need More Than What You’re Asking For

What do your prayers consist of?

Is it mainly pleas for God to meet your needs?

Is it pleas for protection?

Are your prayers more about wants than about needs?

Do you feel like you need something more, but you just don’t know what it is?

I think most of us need more than what we are asking for

For example, Jesus told satan in Matthew 4:4 “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Now, I don’t think that Jesus was not wanting us to pray or ask God to give us food. I think what he is trying to do is remind us that we are souls with bodies and not the other way around. We should be more concerned with feeding our souls then feeding our bodies. We need God to live. And we don’t necessarily live that way all the time.

We are missing out if we don’t ask

James tells us in James 4:2 “You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.” 

Are you afraid to pray for certain things? Are your prayers small prayers because you are not sure that God will answer a “Big” prayer? James says that you are not getting those prayers answered because your choosing not to even ask. Besides, I think God can do way more than we even realize.

Beyond words or imagination

Paul tells us in Ephesians 3:20 “to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”

More than we can ask or imagine. We can’t even begin to think of words to describe what God can do. We don’t have  a vocabulary for the things He can do. Our minds are not capable of even imagining at that level. God is bigger, stronger, more powerful, more creative, and wiser than we will ever know.

Smart enough to pray for us

In fact, God is so wise and powerful that He can pray for us. He can put the words in our mouth that we not even able to get out. Paul tells us in Romans 8:26-27 

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.  And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

Are you not even sure what to pray for? Just come to Him in prayer. Seek him for more than what you’ve been seeking him for. Even if you don’t know how to say it. Come to him with that desire and he will help you through the power of His spirit.

You need more than what you’re asking for

God knows that we need more than what normally ask for. And He knows that it’s easy for us to get lost in the trivial things of life. He knows that it’s easy for us to get caught up in asking for wants. But we need more than that. We need Him. We always need more of Him. John Piper says it this way, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.”

We need more than health, wealth, food, safety, and shelter. We need Him. We need to be more satisfied in him than in anything else. And so we must ask for that. We might not have the imagination or the words to do so. But don’t let that stop you because He can do more than we can ask or imagine.
